REAL ID Act of 2005 was initiated by President Bush and Congress as a sort of national ID to try and create a solution that would remedy the fake identities used by others pretending to be American citizens. One of the terrorist pilots who flew the plane into the World Trade Center was pretending to be an American.
In the document itself, Section 302 states:
“The ground surveillance technologies utilized in the pilot program shall include the following:
(A) Video camera technology.
(B) Sensor technology.
(C) Motion detection technology.”
This is a federal mandate and will be required initially May 11, 2008 with the final date due in 2010 for all states to comply with the Department of Homeland Security initiative. In order to get onto an airplane that crosses a state line, you will have to have a REAL ID driver's license.
Some of the states, such as Montana, and Civil Liberties organizations such as the ACLU, are absolutely against the REAL ID Act. Many believe it will create a "big brother is watching" type of government system, and goes directly against the Fourth Amendment of the United States Constitution, which is about your right to privacy not being infringed upon. The RF tags in these cards will have micro batteries in them that last about ten years and the concern is that you can and will be monitored in your whereabouts at all times while in society. How can this happen? Currently in Phoenix, there is a closed circuit camera system monitoring traffic intersections and all freeways. Tie this in with RF readers and the time you left for work will be monitored as you drive under bridges and intersections. Bad guys have access to this technology as well, and will be able to see who left the area to go to work. You may come back to an empty house!
